11: Then the LORD sent Gideon, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel to save you, and you lived in safety.

From then on Gideon was called Jerubbaal, which means "Let Baal defend himself," because he knocked down Baal's altar.

One day she sent for Barak son of Abinoam, who lived in Kedesh in the land of Naphtali. She said to him, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, commands you: Assemble ten thousand warriors from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor.

Now Jephthah of Gilead was a great warrior. He was the son of Gilead, but his mother was a prostitute.
Gilead's wife also had several sons, and when these half brothers grew up, they chased Jephthah off the land. "You will not get any of our father's inheritance," they said, "for you are the son of a prostitute."
So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Soon he had a large band of rebels following him.
At about this time, the Ammonites began their war against Israel.
When the Ammonites attacked, the leaders of Gilead sent for Jephthah in the land of Tob. They said,

Then the LORD turned to him and said, "Go with the strength you have and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!"

Nor did they show any loyalty to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon), despite all the good he had done for Israel.

So the Philistines were subdued and didn't invade Israel again for a long time. And throughout Samuel's lifetime, the LORD's powerful hand was raised against the Philistines.

Again the Israelites did what was evil in the LORD's sight, so the LORD handed them over to the Philistines, who kept them in subjection for forty years.
In those days, a man named Manoah from the tribe of Dan lived in the town of Zorah. His wife was unable to become pregnant, and they had no children.
The angel of the LORD appeared to Manoah's wife and said, "Even though you have been unable to have children, you will soon become pregnant and give birth to a son.
You must not drink wine or any other alcoholic drink or eat any forbidden food.
You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and his hair must never be cut. For he will be dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. He will rescue Israel from the Philistines."
